Preparing for your first appointment
You do not need to diagnose yourself or know medical terminology. Prepare a brief account of what has changed and what you hope to discuss.
Write down the essentials
Choose two or three important questions. Note when each symptom began, how it has changed and what makes it better or worse. You can refer to your notes during the visit.
Bring relevant information
Prepare a list of medicines and supplements, allergy information and relevant previous reports. Discuss whether additional investigations are needed with your clinician.
Ask for a clear explanation
Ask the clinician to explain unfamiliar terms, the purpose of a recommendation, possible alternatives and what to do if your condition changes. At the end, summarise the agreed next step in your own words.
For an online appointment
Check the connection and sound in advance and choose a place where you can speak comfortably. Keep your questions and reports nearby. The suitability of online care and any need for an in-person assessment are discussed individually.
